ThreeSixtyThree° Restaurant – Kolkata, India

Where? ThreeSixtyThree° is a newly opened, ‘casual fine dining’ restaurant at the The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata, West Bengal,  India.

During my latest trip the Kolkata I stayed at the luxury hotel, The Oberoi Grand. The hotels various restaurants offer some of the best places to eat in the city already, but this year saw the opening of their new restaurant offering, Three Sixty Three°.

The restaurant’s varied menu offers a mixture of modern and traditional specialities, with Indian, Asian and European influences. Pick from local Bengali dishes like Kosha Mangsho (a sublime, rich, spicy, lamb curry preparation) to lobster thermidor, a signature dish of the hotel. There’s a great range of healthy, vegetarian options too or you could try your hand at a sushi making class with the speciality Japanese chef, Raul Borjas.

Breakfast

You can choose to have the breakfast buffet or pick a la carte. Either way the restaurant is filled with a plethora of options, from the tropical fruit section, the bakery station, eggs to your taste, oriental and the Indian breakfasts, the choice is excellent. There’s so much on offer they can cater for the fussiest of eaters. I counted 6 different types of yoghurt including a dairy free option.

The Decor

The interior at ThreeSixtyThree° is the perfect blend of modernity meets tradition, much like the restaurants ethos. The 4800 square foot space is airy and light, due to the huge sky light window commanding most of the ceiling. The entire side wall is glass providing unobstructed views of the lush swimming pool and gardens outside.

The furnishings and accessories are minimalist, but the warm colour palette of the room gives it a more homely feel. Geometric sculpted tables and metal works on the walls are offset with classic Indian paintings from the Bengal School of Art.

The bakery station has every type of bread you can think of and oven at the back, is on at all times to make sure your bread is toasted exactly how you want it.

How do you like your eggs in the morning? I like mine benedict!

First course at breakfast, a tropical fruit platter. The orange granules at the side of the plate are a chilli and fine salt mix, which tastes great on the guava, a very local tradition.

Dinner is served

In the evening I was joined by mama and papa Rakhit for supper. The chef came over to say hello, which is lovely as he does the rounds of the tables to make sure all the diners are happy.

There were so many options we just couldn’t decide. So we opted for the veggie, meat and royal bengal thalis, which meant we could try a little of each of the iconic curries, a bit like a tasting menu. Be warned though, the thali isn’t just the main course, it comes with amuse bouche, starter platter, the thali itself (which is the main event) plus an assiette of desserts.

I actually couldn’t finish it all so the chefs very kindly let me have a doggy bag, which I had for lunch the next day :) I think we’d all bitten off a bit more than we could chew!

No word of a lie, this is the starter (above) which accompanies the main! In real life just one of those plates would be enough for my main course!

The meat thali displaying two types of vegetarian bowls, dahl, fish, chicken, lamb, rice, chutney and salad. Not to mention the roti and popadoms on the side.

Post dinner and I’m stuffed! So just time to nip to the bar for a little night cap. The hotel has one of the finest wine lists in the city as well as a rare malt whisky menu. I think I’ll try a signature gin cocktail though….

Good night from ThreeSixtyThree°
