Marrakech – What to wear when you’re there
Where? Marrakech, Morocco
Exactly? All photos were shot on location at Palais Namaskar Hotel and Dar Lain private villa.
When? September 2015
With its rock ‘n’ roll heritage; the Rolling Stones used to hide out here in the 60’s; and its ‘Summer of Love’ legacy, Marrakech has more than earned its style credentials. The inspirational draw of the exotic, kaleidoscopic souks, colourful spices, crumbling rose and ochre exteriors and majestic riads, have been enticing the fashion set for decades.
Yves Saint Laurent bought and refurbished the spectacular, Jardin Marjorelle in the 80’s (StyleTraveller post to follow this week). More recently Poppy Delevigne’s, Moroccan wedding guest list, included a stellar cast of fashion royalty, from Alexa Chung, Matthew Williamson, Mark Ronson to Princess Bea. And when Posh and Becks hosted a three day birthday blow out celebration in Marrakech, the fashion flag was firmly planted.
So I thought I’d better pop along and see what all the fuss is about!
Best time to go? Season starts in Sept through to June, so great if you fancy a bit of winter sun.
What to Pack for Marrakech What to wear when you’re there?
Dressing for the day and night in Marrakech couldn’t be more different. Morocco is an islamic country so when you’re out and about during the day, in the city or the souks, it’s respectful for female travellers to cover shoulders and legs.
In the evening if you’re hanging out with the Marrakech cool set, in trendy bars and clubs like Le Comptoir or Theatro, go glam. Ladies get the cocktail dresses out, make sure your hair and make up is perfectly groomed and accessorise your look with vertiginous heels. For the boys? Trousers rather than shorts and wear closed toe shoes for the restaurants. It gets quite dressy after dark.
I teamed up with London department store, Fenwick of Bond Street to do a Moroccan inspired shoot. We shot it on location in the stunning grounds of Palais Namaskar (voted one of the most beautiful hotels in the world) and Dar Lain (the stunning, luxury private villa).
