Where to stay
The main resort areas in Bali are Seminyak, Kuta, Ubud, Nusa Dua and Jimbaran Bay. Kuta is effectively the commercial centre, it’s the Aussie equivalent of Benidorm, good for surfers and partying. It’s quite tacky, a visit is ok but I wouldn’t want to stay there. Nusa Dua is aimed at honey moon couples and families, all the main international luxury hotel chains are based here. Some travellers say it lacks character, but it is picturesque and not far from Seminyak (half an hour in a taxi) if you fancy a night out. Seminyak is a great option for holidays with friends, the crowd is young, chic and bustling with great bars and restaurants. For the ultimate in relaxation head to Ubud, where ‘Eat, Prey, Love’ was filmed. Lushious green paddy fields on hillside platforms, housing some of the worlds most beautiful retreats and spa hotels.

Recently opened, the latest offering from the international hotel group, W Retreat and Spa Bali is the style travellers hotel of choice in Seminyak. Incredible decor as is expected from the W, but also located next door to Potato Head and near Sarong Restaurant if, heaven forbid, you might want to venture out of the hotel.

We stayed at the hotel Melia in Nusa Dua. Set in immaculately manicured grounds, the rooms are luxurious, it’s the perfect place for couples. Book one of the lagoon access suites, where you can dive into a private pool straight from your bedroom terrace. Bliss!

Absolutely LOVE your blog! Will definitely be turning to it next time I need to pack a bag for my travels. Have just moved to Singapore from the UK so came across your piece on Singapore and have since been inspired by Bali. Oh, and your piece on Shoreditch was a lovely reminder of the UK. More please!
HI Rachel, no worries at all, i have India and Dubai coming up soon so more places not too far from you to visit. Did you make it out to Bali in the end?
Lovely article, thank you! But you didn’t mention Tanah Lot! I had the pleasure of staying at Le Meridien Nirvana Spa at Tanah Lot – so peaceful & relaxing. A bit out of the way if you’re into night life – about an hour (free hotel shuttle, so you get to see lots of scenery) from Kuta and Ubud. Dreaming of a return … ah well …
HI Diane,
Thanks for the rec, i will definitely try out Tanah Lot next time i’m out there. I know what you mean by ‘Dreaming of a return!’

Hello everybody,
If i may recommend a place to stay in Bali, I would say the Pearl Hotel in Bali.
Quiet, nice and a perfect service.
The Pearl restaurant is also the best place to eat in Bali
